How To Get Ready For 2023 In Your Business

Jennie Bardrick Season 1 Episode 10

Today I'm going to be helping you get your business ready for 2023. As you know by now, I'm a big fan of planning. And I'm going to be sharing with you my top tips for how to get ready for 2023 in your business.

Why is it important to get ready for your business in 2023? Before 2023 starts? Well, in my opinion, having a plan before you get to the moment that you've got to execute the plan is quite a logical and savvy thing to do if you want to be one step ahead of your competitors.

I have four tips for you

1. Reflection. The first thing you need to do is take time out of your business to reflect. Think about your proudest achievements. Think about your highs, think about your lows.

2. Focus on your word for 2023. Every year I come up with a word that I want my year to represent. I want you to think about 2023 for you and your business and what word you could use to absolutely encompass what you want that year to be.

3. Have an overall plan. You might be bored of me talking about this by now, but I love planning, I love strategy in business. As a small business, we don't always prioritise planning but if you do, you will be standing yourself ahead of your competition. Have a one or two page plan for your year 2023.

4. Take it one quarter at a time. I break my year up into four quarters, quarter one, January, February, March, quarter, two April, May, June, quarter, three July, August, September and called four October, November, December. Doing it like this just makes the year feel so much more manageable. And you can set yourself mini goals for each quarter.

The Question of The Podcast - 'What is your word for 2023 in your business?'

I really want to hear such a variety of words. And I really want to know what your headspace is like and where you're going in 2023. Please just share with me what word comes to you when I talked about that word for the year.

This will be going up on my Instagram and my LinkedIn @Jenlistercoaching as a question so please do comment, send me a DM reply to my stories with your answer.

Hello, and welcome back to the Jen Lister Podcast. Today I'm going to be helping you get ready for your business in 2023. As you know by now, I'm a big fan of planning. And I'm going to be sharing with you my top tips for how to get ready for 2023 in your business.

At the end of the episode, I will also be sharing with you the podcast question. And that will also be going out on my social media. So @JenListerCoaching on Instagram and LinkedIn. And I'd love love love to hear your response to the question.

Why is it important to get ready for your business in 2023? Before 2023 starts? Well, in my opinion, having a plan before you get to the moment that you've got to execute the plan is quite a logical and savvy thing to do. A lot of people will start thinking about what they want 2023 to look like when they get to January. But actually, that's kind of a little bit too late. If you want to be one step ahead of your competitors. If you want to thrive through what is in 2022 2023 a difficult season for businesses with the recession, then I would absolutely urge you to take action now.

Number one, reflection. The first thing you need to do is take time out of your business to reflect what this looks like is up to you, but here are some ideas. Block out half a day in your diary, go to a cafe, go to your favourite cafe that you feel inspired in, take a notepad, take a pen, get your favourite drink, coffee, hot chocolate, that would be mine, herbal teas, noughties and journal and reflect on your year.

Think about your proudest achievements. Think about your highs, think about your lows, what were your biggest challenges? What did you really find difficult this year? And also think about what did you learn? What did you learn this year? That one will take a little bit more digging? You've really got to think about what have you gone through what have you experienced? But then what was that learning? What was the learning point of that difficult time.

The reason that reflection is so so important is it will help you and it'll give you a foundation for next year. It will help you consider what you want next year to look like what things you want to keep for next year and what things you do not want to keep for next year. What stuff do you want to do differently? What new things do you need to launch? What current things do you need to get rid of. Take that time out to reflect on your business.

If you need some inspiration, or if you just want to find out a bit more about me. I've got an episode, which is all about my 2022. And I'm reflecting on my business in 2022. Now in doing that, naturally, things come up from other elements of your life, your personal life, your health, your relationships. And that's important, right? That stuff needs to come up because it's all interlinked. And as I say a lot, there's no point in having a thriving business if you haven't got a happy, personal life. So that's number one, take the time out in your business for reflection.

2. focus on your word for 2023. I love this so much. Every year I come up with a word that I want my gear to represent. I want you to think about 2023 for you and your business and what word you could use to absolutely encompass what you want that year to be. I think for the first year, my business the word was Inspire. And I think for the second year, I can't even remember that's quite funny, isn't it?

It was either passion or growth. I can't remember one of the two. But you might want other words, it might be community or it might be stabilise. I mean, that's not very sexy. I know, but actually, for me in 2023, I really want to be focused on just more of the same. I don't need my business to grow loads, I just want more of the same in my life.

Think about your word for 2023, and be creative with this write your word out in a really nice way you could do it on Canva. Or you could just do it by hand if you love a bit of drawing like me, and put it on your desk somewhere where you can see it, keep it with you and make sure your year really does stay true to that.

Number three is have an overall plan. You might be bored of me talking about this by now, but I love planning, I love strategy in business. As a small business, we don't always prioritise planning but if you do, you will be standing yourself ahead of your competition. Have a one or two page plan for your year 2023.

Think about what your goals are for the year. What do you want to launch throughout the year, any products or any new services have really clear and tangible goals. For example, you want to work with, I don't know, 10 clients throughout the next year. And so you want to have at least one if not two clients coming through each month.

Be really clear on what numbers you need to be seeing in your business. And also, what lead generators do you need for that to happen, because to have, say, two clients a month, you might need to have 10 inquiries a month. Be really clear on your numbers and what conversions you need to achieve your goals. Be clear on what revenue targets you've got for each month throughout your business, and focus on your marketing plan. I've said this in another episode, what you do now will show up in three months when it comes to marketing and growing your business. Make sure your marketing plan is a key milestone of your overall plan. And you know what you're committing to in terms of marketing, and keep it authentic to you, because a lot of people see others doing stuff and think I need to do it. But if it doesn't feel aligned to you, then then you don't need to do it.

For example, for me, in my coaching business, I won't be setting up a Facebook community group, because it just doesn't feel aligned to me, it doesn't feel like something I could maintain and put enough effort into for the people to be valued enough. Because I don't work full time, every single day of the week, it just doesn't feel aligned to me.

Make sure that your 2023 plan has got a marketing plan that is aligned to you and what you want to achieve in your business.

Number four, is take it one quarter at a time. I love love love this in business. I break my gear up into four quarters, quarter one, January, February, March, quarter, two April, May, June, quarter, three July, August, September and called four October, November, December.

This is really magical. Doing it like this just makes the year feel so much more manageable. And you can set yourself mini goals for each quarter. Once you've got your overall plan, which was my point three, have your overall 2023 plan. Take it one quarter at a time. Break it down. And let's just focus on quarter one start with just focus on January, February, March.

What are those goals that you've got for those months? What is it that you're going to launch? In those months? Are you going to change your prices in those months? I know January is a time  that some businesses do decide to increase their prices, what are the things that you're going to be doing in the start of the year.

When you go into this part of business planning for 2023? Think about your customer mindset. For example, we know in January, it's the time where we're paying off our credit card bills from Christmas, some of us or the weather's really, really bad. And actually loneliness is at a peak in January.

Think about your marketing. Think about your messaging. We know February in the UK is Valentine's Day, is that something in your business that you can think about and you can plan something around. Think about what events, what launches, what marketing campaigns you can do in that first quarter of your year to grow your business.

There you have it, my top tips for you to get your business plan going ready for 2023. The first one is do your reflection, do your reflection time on 2022 first, the second one is figure out your word for the year for 2023. The third one is have that overall plan for 2023. And the last one is take it one quarter at a time.

As promised, I am now going to share with you the question of the podcast. The answer that I'd love to hear from you today is 'What is your word for 2023 in your business', I really want to hear such a variety of words.
